HV Substation Design

HV Substation Design

Designing a high-voltage (HV) substation includes various technical and safety considerations. The essential purpose
is to ensure the efficient and reliable transmission of electrical power while minimizing environmental impact. Below
is a snapshot of the services we provide as a part of high-voltage substation design:

Site Selection

This includes the geographical location, considering extreme temperatures, area classification (e.g., areas with high
humidity or air pollution), ensuring that the site is accessible for construction and maintenance, considering the
environmental impact, and proximity of loads to minimize transmission losses.

Substation Layout

Create comprehensive Single Line Diagrams and protection and metering three-line diagrams. Develop layout
drawings to ensure proper clearances and feasibility of future expansions.

Conduct Soil Investigation

Perform subsurface soil tests to gather information for the design of substation foundations.

Electrical Design
  • Sizing power transformers to meet future demand, ambient temperature, and altitude conditions duringvarious operating scenarios.
  • Sizing instrument transformers to meet protection and metering requirements.
  • Selection of busbar configuration.
  • Selection and sizing of disconnectors (i.e., isolators) and earth switches.
  • Selection and sizing circuit breakers: determine rated voltage, BIL rating, current, and short-circuit breakingcapacity to exceed the maximum short-circuit current at the location.
  • Grounding systems: Design an effective grounding system to protect equipment and personnel from step andtouch potential and Ground Potential Rise (GPR).
  • Lightning system: Design an effective grounding system to protect equipment and personnel from damaging lightning strikes.
Control & Monitoring Systems

Ensure proper control and supervision of all substation equipment.
Safety Systems
Include fire protection and PPE selection to protect maintenance personnel from arc flash and shock hazards.

Cost Estimation & Budgeting
  • Material costs: Estimate the costs of materials, equipment, and labor required for construction.
  • Lifecycle costs: Consider maintenance costs as well as potential future upgrades.
Standards & Compliance

Ensure that the design complies with relevant industry standards (e.g., IEEE, IEC) and safety codes
